Phi Mu

Since being founded in Macon, Georgia on March 4, 1852, Phi Mu has evolved into one of the strongest women's fraternities in the nation with over 150,000 members. The Phi Mu founders' original objective for their organization was the social, moral, and mental improvement of their members. Some 150 years later, the long-standing tradition of helping others and creating a positive environment is alive and fresh with the Rho Chapter of Phi Mu here at Hanover College.

The women of Phi Mu enthusiastically support the sorority's main philanthropy, Children's Miracle Network. Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana is the local member of CMN that the Rho Chapter focuses their philanthropic activities on. Not only does Phi Mu visit the children of Riley, they also raise money and make toys and fleece blankets for the children. Also, every fall, the ladies prepare care packages for exam week for the campus at large in order to raise money for this organization. Each year, the Phi Mu women invite the campus to join them for pizza and a live band for their Pink Caddy Dance. All ticket proceeds go to the Children's Miracle Network. Additionally, they sold pizza at a school concert to help contribute to the relief fund for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Phi Mu extends their helping hands throughout the community with various service projects as well. Habitat for Humanity, walking dogs at the Humane Society, College Mentors for Kids, and Relay for Life are a few organizations to which these women give their time.

The wonderful camaraderie and sisterhood that is present in Rho Chapter encourages open participation in various activities at Hanover. They take pride in the fact that they represent on all the varsity intercollegiate teams, are all active in intramurals, have leaders participating in Student Senate and the Panhellenic Council, contribute in the International Club, sing in choir, are involved in orchestra, display their talents in theatre, show their creativity in arts, organize events in Student Programming Board, represent Phi Mu in off-campus study programs, and countless other activities. Phi Mu's involvement and leadership on this campus are qualities to be admired.

Phi Mu also takes pride in scholarship, as one of its main goals is to promote academic excellence. They are very proud that their 2007 winter pledge class had the highest GPA and they have continued to improve their rank in overall house GPA in the past couple years. Each semester, many members of the Phi Mu house are recognized for being members of the Dean's List at Hanover College with a pearl dangle off of their fraternity badge. The sisterhood encourages scholarship with test files, study tables, student tutors, acknowledgement for improvement and outstanding grades, as well as having our once-a-semester Carnation Collection Auction for Scholar Dollars.

Finally, the women of Phi Mu like to have fun! This year the ladies worked together to "Pink Dot" the campus to inform students about the strong sisterhood of this chapter as well as winning all events during the Homecoming week. Each semester, sisterhood events, grab-a-dates, semi-formal, and winter formal are but a few events that the ladies have to look forward to. Traditionally they also held their sisterhood Christmas party and decorated their house "Griswald" style, winning the campus wide lights competition. No matter what they are doing, the Phi Mu women have a great time being together and strengthening their bond of sisterhood. At Hanover campus, Phi Mu knows how to have fun and represent their chapter well.
