Staffing in the Halls/Houses
Hanover College has devoted considerable time and effort in the development of its staff within Residential Life. From the staff in the central office to the staff members living in the halls and houses.
Professional Live-In Staff
Hall Directors (HD's) are professional staff members who live in some of the residences. They supervise RA's, advise hall councils, work with RA's, develop student leaders through mentoring and advising, faculty and other Student Life staff in the development and planning of programs and events, mediate conflicts, and encourage adherence to College policies.
House Directors (HDs) are staff members who live in a fraternity or sorority house. They are hired jointly by the undergraduate members of the chapter, the Alumni House Corporation, and the College. In this unique position, the HD ensures that all college administrative work is completed, they oversee other staff members hired by the chapter (cooks, housekeepers, contracted repair men, etc.), and work with the House Corporation to prioritize and carry out house improvements. They also assist members of the Chapter on a daily basis; working with them to plan Chapter activities, establish house rules associated with community living, and encouraging adherence to College policies.
Paraprofessional Staff
Student Hall Director is an upper class student who resides in the upper class residence hall (Wiley). They supervise RA's, advise hall councils, work with RA's, develop student leaders through mentoring and advising, faculty and other Student Life staff in the development and planning of programs and events, mediate conflicts, and encourage adherence to College policies. The student Hall Director facilitates developing a more autonomous living environment for the upper class students.
Building Managers are upper class students who reside in the autonomous living suite-style apartments on campus. The managers serve as liaisons between the residents and the Housing Staff relaying information and working to ensure communities of significance are being built. The building managers work closely with the buildings' hall councils to develop inventive programs geared to upper class residents.
House Managers (HMs) are Greek affiliated students living in their chapter house. They are selected by their chapter to assist the HD in completing administrative paperwork. They are also responsible for assigning rooms within the house and ensuring that any nationally mandated policies, procedures, and standards associated with the house are met. Depending upon the organization, this may be a paid position within the chapter.
Resident Assistants (RAs) are students who have lived on campus at least one year and use their experience to help make living on campus a satisfying and exciting endeavor. RAs assist in making certain the halls are ready when students come to campus, ensure that the living spaces are in good order during the year, plan educational and social events, mediate conflicts between roommates, provide support in stressful times and help ensure mutual respect among all the residents.
