The purpose of the Intensive Inquiry (II) program is to bring together talented, intellectually curious students from varied majors with a faculty member of their choosing, and to give them the opportunity to pursue intensive inquiry of their own design in an off-campus environment.

The program you propose should involve the identification of readings or other academic exercises that are designed to engage you and the other participants in two or more days of focused inquiry and discussion.

II is an opportunity for you to work closely with other students and faculty who have an interest in the same things you do. If you plan to do a directed study or independent study next term, you might propose an intensive inquiry as preliminary preparation. If you write a paper on a topic of particular interest, get together with other students for an intensive inquiry on that topic. If you perform a certain laboratory exercise, but want to know what the next step might be, this might be an intensive inquiry. Propose an intensive inquiry about further study of something you were only able to glimpse in a class. The possibilities are endless and Intensive Inquiry is a rare opportunity to build a lasting relationship with fellow students and faculty in an off-campus academic setting.

Guidelines and Procedures for Submitting Proposal
1.
General expectations are that:
. there are at least 8 and no more than 12 students (1 of whom will serve as group leader and at least 1 will be a certified college driver) committed to participation on firm dates. These should be students who are genuinely interested in the topic. The group leader should feel free to advertise openings on the intranet, to ask faculty members for recommendations, or any other means of advertising to fill all 8-12 slots in their II;
. there is one faculty member committed to participating on those dates;
. the proposed inquiry has a clearly defined focus, and an achievable academic purpose;
. the II will be in an off-campus setting, a reasonable distance for the time span of the II. Intensive Inquiry is not, necessarily, a cultural experience, but rather an intensive study. The proposal must justify the necessity for traveling to the specified location; and have an itemized budget.
. The Intensive Inquiry will not necessitate absence from class.
. An Intensive Inquiry proposed for more than two days and one night should provide a plan for student financial contributions (fundraising, student fee, etc.)
2. The group leader and other members of the group should refine and clarify the proposal before the deadline arrives.
3. Once the deadline passes, all proposals will be forwarded to Student Academic Assistance Committee (SAAC) for consideration. The group leader and faculty member will be sent notification of acceptance or denial.
4. Each individual participant of approved II programs will receive a confirmation form through campus mail to which a response is REQUIRED. Only those students who complete and return the confirmation form will be permitted to attend the II. This response confirms that the student will participate fully in the proposed Intensive Inquiry, will uphold the principles of Hanover College during the Intensive Inquiry, and will pay a "no-show" charge of $75 if he or she fails to attend the Intensive Inquiry.

Arrangements:
Group Leaders will be responsible for making the experience happen with guidance from a staff advisor. All travel, lodging, and meal arrangements and any extra arrangements such as museum tickets will be organized by the group. They will also be responsible for keeping the other student participants, faculty member and the staff advisor informed as plans progress. Planning will take organization and dedication, but this insures that each II is tailored to what the participants want.
